Every spring, the Netherlands turns into a patchwork of color. Rows of tulips stretch as far as you can see with bright reds, soft pinks, deep purples, and yellows so vibrant they almost don’t look real. And honestly? Photos don’t quite do it justice. If you’ve ever dreamed of visiting the tulip fields near Lisse in bloom, this guide will help you plan it properly, without the stress, the crowds (well… mostly), and the common mistakes. Tulips aren’t originally Dutch (fun fact), but the Netherlands has completely made them their thing. Since the 17th century they’ve become one of the country’s most iconic symbols. Today, billions of tulip bulbs are produced here every year.

Where to find Tulip Fields in the Netherlands
Most people head straight to Keukenhof and while it’s beautiful, it’s only part of the experience.
1. Keukenhof
Located in Lisse, this is the most well-known tulip garden in the world. You can find perfectly designed flower beds with over 7 million bulbs and hundreds of varieties. There are windmills, walking paths, and curated displays with tons of cute photo opportunities. While it’s stunning, it is also crowded and arriving early allows you to skip the queues and avoid the crowds.
You can purchase your tickets in advance on the official website. Tickets are 21 Euro for adults and parking is 9 Euro.

2. Lisse & the surrounding fields
This is where it gets special. If you want to visit the actual tulip fields near Lisse, just outside Keukenhof, you’ll find actual working tulip fields, long, colorful stripes stretching into the distance. Lisse is located along the Bollenstreek (the place where tulips grow in Holland). This is the version you’ve probably seen on Instagram. And surprisingly, it can be quiet if you go at the right time. There is even a map to find the route with dozens of tulip fields. The route is located between towns like Lisse, Hillegom, and Noordwijkerhout. We rented bikes at Keukenhof and had the best time cycling on a beautiful sunny day in April admiring the fascinating flower fields.

3. Other regions (if you want fewer tourists)
If you want something less crowded, look into:
- Flevoland
- Noordoostpolder
These areas have just as many tulips but far fewer visitors. In my older and more general guide on where to find tulips in the Netherlands, I focused more on Flevoland and included some general information. Here you can also find out more about the routes in Flevoland.
The Best Way to Explore the Tulip Fields Near Lisse
If there’s one thing I’d recommend: rent a bike. Driving works as well, but cycling lets you:
- Stop whenever you want
- Explore smaller roads
- Actually enjoy the scenery instead of rushing through it and finding parking
This map shows the location of tulip fields near Lisse, all accessible by bike.
Tulip Field Etiquette
This is important and often ignored. Tulip fields are private property, not tourist attractions.
- Don’t walk into the fields unless explicitly allowed
- Stay on paths or edges
- Respect farmers (this is their livelihood)
You can still get amazing photos without stepping into the rows. If you want instagrammable pictures wandering through the fields, you can pay one of the organised experiences.
- Tulip Barn in Hillegom: Tulip Barn offers tulip fields with pretty photo spots in which you can walk and take stunning photos with many photo props. I think for 10 Euros it is worth adding it to your list to get those beautiful shots.
- Tulip Experience Amsterdam allows you to wander among the tulips and take photos without damagung farmer’s tulip fields. You can learn how tulips grow and bloom in the museum and then stroll through the garden and pick a bouquet in the picking area. The whole eyperience is 12,50 Euros.
When to Visit the Tulip Fields Near Lisse
Tulip season is short and timing can make or break your trip. It can be unpredictable and therefore more difficult to plan than another trip. Weather can force tulips into earlier or later flowering. Usually, the season lasts from mid-March to early May. The best time for visiting the tulip fields near Lisse is mid-April as you have the greatest chance to see the tulips in bloom. In the early season there might also be hyacinths and daffodils. The first time I went to the tulip fields with my mom it was in May and we cycled for ages just to realise that most fields had already been cut.
Mid-April is also the time when the Bloemencorso Bollenstreek usually happens which is a spring parade from Harleem to Noordwijk. You can check the dates here.

How to Get To the Tulip Fields Near Lisse
There are different options and depending on what you prefer and which type of transportation you’re using. If you want to combine it with a city trip to Amsterdam (which I highly recommend!) you could either stay in Amsterdam and take a bus/train to get to the tulip fields, or you stay closer to the tulip fields and the sea and take a train, or drive to Amsterdam.
Car: I highly recommend arriving by car as public transport is limited. Lisse is about 30 minutes from Amsterdam. There are also tulip routes you can visit by car if you don’t want to rent a bicycle.
Public Transport: From the airport or the city you can take the Keukenhof-Express (Bus 852) to get to Keukenhof. There, you can rent a bike to visit the surrounding tulip fields. You can also take a train to Sassenheim and change to a bus to the centre of Lisse.

Where to Stay to Explore Tulip Fields Near Lisse
If you can, stay in Lisse. It’s small, not overly busy, and you’re right where all the tulip fields are, so you can head out early (or at sunset) and actually enjoy them without the crowds. That was honestly one of the best parts for me. The only downside is that places here book up fast during tulip season and prices sky-rocket, so it’s worth planning ahead. If you can’t find anything, nearby towns like Noordwijk are a good alternative, or you can base yourself in Amsterdam and just do a day trip as it’s super easy to get there.

Tulip Season in the Netherlands is so special and an absolute bucket list experience. Visiting the tulip fields near Lisse not only offers beautiful views and photo opportunities but also the chance to visit Amsterdam or to take a trip to the sea. If you can, you should definitely connect it with a visit to Amsterdam to make it the perfect short trip in spring!
